What is Positive Pay System for Cheques Payment?

Positive Pay System for Cheque Truncation System was introduced by RBI in September 2020. But practically, PPS (Positive Pay System) was implemented on Jan 1, 2021. The motive behind Positive Pay System is to enhance the safety of the cheque clearance system.

In this new system called Positive Pay Cheque System now if a person issues a heavy amount Cheque (above Rs. 50,000) to the payee then he needs to provide all the necessary details of that Cheque to his bank. The details include Cheque Number, Name of Payee, Amount, Date mentioned on the Cheque, etc. For providing these details drawee has to choose the electronic mode such as SMS, Net Banking, Mobile Banking or by using ATM whatever is being provided by his bank.

During cheque clearance, these provided details will be cross-checked with the details given by the Cheque Truncation System (CTS). If any tampering is found, the process of the cheque clearance will halt and appropriate steps will be taken.

Many of the banks including HDFC, Canara, BOB, ICICI, SBI, etc. already have started using Positive Pay for Cheques and have provided guidance related to this newly implemented system on their official websites. Now Bank of India (BOI) is also going to join this list of banks.

It depends on banks for which amount (must be above Rs 50000) they make Positive Payment compulsory for their customers. But According to RBI, Positive Pay System is a must for the value of cheques of Rs. 500000 and above.

    • Hi Prafull,
Currently, you can submit the details via Net Banking or Mobile Banking, if you want to use Online options. On the other hand, in the Offline option, you have to visit your home branch along with your KYC documents. There is no other option available in BOI for submitting cheque details under PPS.
Alternatively, if you are not into transferring amount online then you can do the payment by cheque and use the above mentioned Mobile banking option for sending details of the cheque in PPS (not for money transfer).

For any other information, you can call the customer care toll free number of Bank of India +91 1800 103 1906

  • This is a very good method for presenting the details of high value checks on the positive pay system.
It facilitates clearance of checks on cross checking details.
But still there is lecunas about the fact that even after giving details in positive pay system, the check is not cleared due to minor reasons.
it should be considered and clearance should made on the fact furnished in positive pay system.
I am facing this problem right now.
